INTERCOM’s LEGACIES
Stephen E. Weil and David Fleming, OBE, have established a strong and enduring legacy for INTERCOM and, no less importantly, for the entire ICOM network.
In honour of Stephen E. Weil, the triennial S.E.W. Lectures were established as a key moment of reflection during ICOM General Conferences. Conceived as a space for critical thinking on the social role, ethics, and public responsibility of museums, the Lectures ensure that Weil’s spirit, vision, and intellectual legacy continue to inform and inspire contemporary museum practice worldwide.
David Fleming worked tirelessly to promote and secure recognition of the Torreón Declaration, a landmark statement affirming the social value of museums and their responsibility to contribute actively to social justice, inclusion, and democratic engagement. His commitment was instrumental in embedding these principles within ICOM’s discourse and practice, reinforcing the role of museums as agents of social change.
